How to Choose Roofing Materials for your Remodeling Project

For most of us the roof is an afterthought, at least until it starts to leak. Only then do we realize how important that shell of our house is. However, in addition to keeping the house flood free, the roof contributes greatly to the character of the home, so when re-roofing, building a new house, or remodeling, it may prove worth your while to think about the subsequent choices.

Blacktop Shingles
The most common roofing material is the standard asphalt shingle covering up the roofs of a great majority of homes throughout America. Comprising one of the cheapest roofing options, blacktop shingles are available in many different colors both solid and blended. The shingle products being produced nowadays are typically certified for twenty to thirty years, marking them good value for money. The next step up is a chunkier variation known as an architectural shingle.

Ceramic Tile Roofs
Ceramic tile roofs are found throughout the Mediterranean and Levant. As ceramic tile roofs are quite heavy, the roof framing needs to be strong enough to support the pressure. Water sealing is achieved through a waterproof membrane placed directly on the roof shielding. Afterward the clay tiles are placed one by one in a pad of mortar. Tiles are turned upside down to form a furrow, which is afterward covered by tiles placed right side up. Look ahead to sixty to eighty years or even more of a perfectly installed tile roof.

Metal Roofing
Metal roofing, within the shape of furrowed, galvanized leafs, have been a standard feature of barns, sheds and agricultural and utility buildings for years. This roof type is easy to install, long-lasting, rugged and cheap. On the other end of the scale is a copper made roof, elegant enough to beautify the premium mansions and public buildings. No matter the style you opt for, normally, a properly installed metal roof should last at least 50 years.
